The purpose of a Neighbourhood Plan is to give the people living in the area a greater say on how their neighbourhood should develop in the future. They cannot be designed to stop development, as this would be against National Planning Policy Framework, but can give local people the chance to influence where and how this develop should take place.

Work commenced on the Walpole Cross Keys Neighbourhood Plan in November 2013 and during each stage of the development of the Plan residents have been kept informed and consulted. As the Plan developed it has been amended several times in line with comments made during consultations.

The Plan includes policies on where development should occur in the parish and what form of development is most needed. The Plan also recognises the drainage issues in some parts of the parish and a policy has been included to ensure that any future development does not make this any worse and wherever possible improve the current situation.

The Plan was inspected by an Independent Examiner during June 2017 and a report was produced by the Examiner. The report recommended minor amendments, which were mainly to ensure the Plan was robust and its policies were clear.

These amendments were made by the Borough Council and the amended version was approved by the Borough Council Cabinet on 1st August 2017.

The next stage was for the Plan to go to a referendum where all residents of the parish, who were registered to vote, could cast their vote. This referendum took place on 28th September 2017 and was approved by just over 80% of those who voted. The Borough Council have now formally adopted the Plan, which can be viewed in full by clicking on the link below:
